Nikki Comninos has been working in the South African film and television industry for twleve years. In that time she has collected over 50 screen titles and two South African Film and Television Awards for editing (one in documentary in 2011 and one in drama in 2015) and a third nomination for documentary short editing in 2016. She was also awarded the South African Editors Guild (S.A.G.E.) acronym for distinguished editors in 2014 and her work as either director or editor has screened at over 25 local and international film festivals. She was selected as one of 6 directors for the Encounters Documentary Filmmaking Lab in 2007 to direct and edit a 48-minute documentary for SABC and the Encounters Documentary Film Festival, Do Girls Want it?, focusing on young women’s views on virginity. In 2006 she was selected for sponsored attendance at the Berlin Talent Campus and in 2005 she was selected for the Sithengi Talent Campus in Cape Town. Nikki finds documentary the most rigorous, challenging and exciting format but has worked in formats ranging from drama to reality, advertising to news, corporate to lifestyle, wildlife and shorts. She is a swift and collaborative editor, earning the nickname comrade supercuts :)
To add to her professional experience, Nikki also has a strong academic background giving her a cutting critical thinking approach to her work. In 2015 she completed her Ph.D. in Creative Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand, focusing on home video and memory, and for which she made a 60-minute documentary film called Fraternal (Official selection: Cambridge African Film Festival, 2015). She was awarded the Mellon Postgraduate Mentoring award and received a scholarship from the National Research Foundation for her PhD studies and was awarded Best Post Graduate student in the Film and TV division in 2015. She received her MA in Television from the University of the Witwatersrand where she studied with a Postgraduate Merit award. She received her BA and Honours degrees in Film and Television from the University of Cape Town for which she graduated with a first class pass in Honours and was placed on the Dean’s list for the duration of her undergraduate degree. She worked for a year as the Head of Training at Big Fish School of Digital Filmmaking and does ad-hoc lecturing and external examining at various academic institutions.
Nikki is based in Johannesburg but is open to travel.
